YOUNG LAWYER'S SALARY SURVEY |
In today's economy, it is imperative for young lawyers and the employers hiring them to know how much a young attorney can reasonably expect to earn during their first few years of practice. Unfortunately, such information has been generally unavailable, and what information has been forthcoming, is often skewed by articles and advertisements focusing only upon the few largest law firms in the biggest cities.
Accordingly, in 2009, the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association, in collaboration with the Career Services Offices at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law, conducted a voluntary Young Lawyers Survey of those young attorneys practicing within Tarrant County. The goal of the survey was to gather information about Tarrant County's legal market to assist young lawyers entering the profession as well as local employers looking to hire young attorneys. The survey included inquiries designed to provide some perspective on the expectations of young lawyers and their employers with respect to compensation and employment requirements. The results of the survey are provided for your interpretation and review by clicking here. In addition, correlations between (1) size of employer and salary, and (2) years of practice and salary, have been provided.
We wish to thank our members who participated in the survey, the committee who coordinated the survey and our past presidents, Caroline Harrison, Leslie Hunt, Theresa Berend, and Jennifer Willingham. We look forward to improving the survey in the years to come. |

FW-TCYLA & TWU School of Law Raise over $21,000 for Endowment in Memory of Jeff Kubes
|
| In September of 2008, the Tarrant County legal community lost one of its committed young lawyers, Jeffrey Kubes, who suffered an untimely death due to an auto accident. Jeff was deeply committed to serving others both personally and professionally. Integrity, determination, honesty and . . . poker and baseball are the key words that come to mind when describing Jeff Kubes and his passions. As a graduate of Texas Tech University and Texas Wesleyan University School of Law and as a Director of the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association Board of Directors, Jeff knew the importance of law, education and service, and he utilized his experience and ever-friendly attitude to inspire others to achieve beyond expectation.
In the Fall of 2009, the FW-TCYLA partnered with TWU School of Law and the Kubes Family to establish an endowed scholarship fund in memory of Jeff. Since Jeff loved to play poker, an event coined the Cowtown Double-Down Casino Night was held on the night of October 29, 2009 at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth, with all proceeds to benefit this fund. The goal was to fund the scholarship for the benefit of a qualified student of TWU School of Law, Jeff’s Alma Mater.
The event was spearheaded by Cory Halliburton, associate attorney of Weycer, Kaplan, Pulaski & Zuber, PC and FW-TCYLA Committee Chair, and Casey R. Dyer, JD, Director of Alumni Relations & External Affairs for TWU School of Law. Jeff’s father, Rick Kubes of Kubes Jewelers in Fort Worth, as well as Jeff’s brother, Greg Kubes, financial advisor with Edward Jones, also worked diligently in making sure that this event was nothing but fun, successful and a joyous occasion to honor Jeff.
Given Jeff’s close family and widespread ties to the Tarrant County community, each of the more than 100 gaming table positions was absolutely filled throughout the evening. Indeed, there was standing room only in the “pit” full of Jeff’s family, friends and fellow Tarrant County lawyers, both “young” and “old”. Ultimately, the net proceeds from the event was just over $21,000, all of which funded the Jeff Kubes Memorial Scholarship Fund now held by Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. TWU School of Law, FW-TCYLA and the Kubes Family intend to work together into the future to ensure the Scholarship will fulfill the purposes for its establishment.
The FW-TCYLA, TWU School of Law and the Kubes Family expresses a great appreciation for the following donors to this charitable cause: Ms. Karen L. Montgomery; Mr. Mark J. Healing Wounds
|
On February 17th, FWTCYLA presented "Healing Wounds: A Guide to Navigating the Legal System After Abuse" to the Ladder Alliance. The program consisted of dinner provided by FWTCYLA, followed by a 25 minute video of an abuse survivor explaining how to communicate with your attorney, what to expect in court and their rights when the divorce is final. In addition, John Shaw, Heather Ogier, Laura Docker, Jill Johnson and Nancy Phillips answered questions of the 40 attendees ranging from abuse and divorce to tax and employment issues. The volunteers were especially supportive in directing women to free legal services and advising them on how to represent themselves if necessary.
This successful program was completely free of charge to The Ladder Alliance. This event was made possible through the efforts of our wonderful volunteers and a generous grant from the Texas Young Lawyers Association | Add Content...
